COMPARISON
MarginFuse vs Helicone
Short version: these are different jobs. Helicone is a LLM observability platform and AI gateway. MarginFuse connects Stripe revenue to per-request AI cost, shows margin per customer, and stops loss-making requests. This page lays out which job you are hiring for.
CHOOSE HELICONE IF
- ·You need request-level debugging: traces, sessions, latency, error rates
- ·You want gateway features - caching, rate limits, automatic fallbacks
- ·You want prompt experiments, datasets and evaluation tooling
- ·You want an open-source, one-line proxy integration
CHOOSE MARGINFUSE IF
- ●You need to know which customers, plans and features make or lose money
- ●You charge flat subscriptions and AI cost varies per customer
- ●You want loss-making requests stopped, not just observed
- ●You do not want prompts or responses leaving your application
Side by side
| HELICONE | MARGINFUSE | |
|---|---|---|
| Primary job | Request-level observability: cost, tokens, latency per request; gateway features | Margin per customer, plus policies that stop loss-making requests |
| Revenue data | No billing-system connection - cost side only | Yes - read-only Stripe connection joins revenue to AI cost |
| Margin per customer | Per-user cost analytics; no revenue join, so no margin | Core feature: gross margin per customer, plan and feature |
| Enforcement | Gateway rate limits and caching - not tied to customer revenue or margin | Alert, downgrade, require top-up, or block - per customer, revenue-aware, simulated in dry-run first, fail-open |
| Dry-run savings evidence | Not a documented feature | Yes - policies replay recorded traffic; savings reports are built from your own events |
| Prompt & response content | Logged as part of request traces - that is the product's debugging purpose | Cannot receive them: the SDK event shape has no prompt/response fields |
| Entry pricing | Free (10k requests/mo) · $79/mo Pro · $799/mo Team, plus usage-based pricing | Free (dry-run monitoring) · $29/mo Indie · $99/mo Pro |
| Open source | Yes | No |

The real difference
Helicone answers operational questions: what did this request cost, which prompts are slow, where did the trace fail. It is genuinely good at that job, and if you are debugging an AI product you probably want something like it.
MarginFuse answers a financial question Helicone does not ask: is this customer profitable? That requires the revenue side - who pays what, on which plan - which is why MarginFuse connects to Stripe read-only and joins it with per-request AI cost. Cost per user without revenue per user cannot tell you who is burning your margin.
The second difference is action. Observability ends at a dashboard; MarginFuse policies can alert, downgrade, require a top-up, or block when a customer crosses your margin target - simulated in dry-run first, reversible, and fail-open if MarginFuse is unreachable.
CAN YOU USE BOTH?
Yes, and it is a sensible stack: Helicone for engineering observability (traces, debugging, caching), MarginFuse for unit economics and protection (margin per customer, policies). They read different signals from the same traffic and do not conflict.
COMMON QUESTIONS
- Does MarginFuse replace Helicone?
- No. Helicone is an observability and gateway tool for debugging AI requests; MarginFuse is a profitability tool that joins Stripe revenue to AI cost and enforces margin policies. Many teams would reasonably run both.
- Helicone already shows cost per user. Why is that not enough?
- Cost per user is half of the margin equation. Without each customer's revenue - their plan, their invoices - you cannot know whether $40 of AI cost is fine (a $299 plan) or a loss (a $29 plan). MarginFuse joins both sides and acts on the result.
- Does MarginFuse see my prompts like an observability tool does?
- No. Observability tools log prompts and responses because debugging requires them. MarginFuse's SDK event shape has no fields for prompt or response content, so it cannot receive them - it works on metadata only.
